Spinal cord injury (SCI) is caused by damage to the nerves carrying electrical impulses that control movement, from the brain to the body. These nerves which are in a thick bundle are surrounded by the vertebrae or back bone and injury can occur when the vertebrae are damaged. The nerves may remain intact but scarred and this may result in complete or incomplete loss of function below the site of the injury.
