SCI SPINAL CORD INJURY

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is caused by damage to the nerves carrying electrical impulses that control movement, from the brain to the body. These nerves which are in a thick bundle are surrounded by the vertebrae or back bone and injury can occur when the vertebrae are damaged. The nerves may remain intact but scarred and this may result in complete or incomplete loss of function below the site of the injury. Most of these injuries are caused as a result of car accidents and are suffered predominately by males who are also the main victims of quadriplegia. Other causes of this injury include falls, contact sports injuries, assaults and gunshot wounds.

If you suffer from SCI our specialist solicitors will advise you on how to protect your legal right to claim compensation. They are able to deal with injuries of the utmost severity and are they are experienced in settling paraplegia and quadriplegia claims both before and after the issue of court proceedings. Our lawyers can guide you through the complex web of legal and medical issues and will leave no stone unturned in their quest for fair and reasonable compensation.

To succeed in a claim for compensation the injured party must show that the person allegedly to blame for the accident has acted negligently, that the negligence caused the injury and the extent of the injury must then be proved together with the damages associated with the injury. These difficult compensation claims require a keen understanding of the law and an ability to properly present a case based on the evidence of a dynamic and highly qualified team of expert witnesses.

Compensation that can be claimed includes ‘General Damages’ which represents compensation items that are difficult to calculate accurately and include ‘pain and suffering’ , loss of the enjoyment of life and disadvantage on the open labour market. In addition a claim can be made for ‘Special Damages’ which represents compensation for losses that can be accurately calculated and may include;

  • medical charges
  • loss of earnings
  • insurance excess
  • damage to property
  • assistance for household chores
  • care and assistance
  • medical therapies
  • traveling expenses
  • vehicle damage
  • expenses
  • vehicle hire
  • aids and equipment
  • adapted accommodation and transport
