Electrocution Injury Accident Compensation Claim Solicitors - Ireland
Electrocution injuries which are often fatal occur as a result of a severe electric shock passing through the body from the point of contact with the electrical source to the nearest earth which is usually the surface upon which the feet are standing ensuring that the electrical discharge often passes through a large portion of the body with the hands frequently being the initial contact point.
Severity of Injury
The severity of the injury as a result of an electric shock depends on the extent of both voltage and current together with the overall duration of exposure. Electrocution may occur as a result of prolonged contact with a source or simply as a result of an instantaneous arc or flash of sufficient magnitude. It makes little difference to the severity of the injury whether the electrical current is alternating (AC) or direct (DC). Further more severe burns often accompany the effects of electrocution from either the point of contact or from accompanying fire.
Damage to the Heart
An electric shock can damage the heart and can cause asystole (a flat line) or ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic rhythm to the heart) which in either case are life threatening unless treated urgently and in the absence of urgent treatment are often fatal. Low voltage AC causes ventricular fibrillation and high voltage AC or DC causes a flat line. The normal treatment for electrucution injuries to the heart is by the use of a defibrillator. Furthermore permanent and irreversible electrocution damage can be caused to the muscles of the heart.
Electric Shock Injuries
Muscle injury arising from severe electric shock is commonplace with freezing of the chest wall muscle often leading to death due to an inability to breath. Other muscles of the body can be permanently damaged even if the accident is not fatal. Life threatening skin burns are common, frequently requiring skin grafting at the point of contact and earth of the electric current. The ear drum may rupture and cataracts may subsequently develop in the eyes. Electrocution may cause multiple organ damage with the liver and kidney being particularly vulnerable.
